Director’s Biography:

Nag Ashwin is an Indian screenwriter and director who has predominantly made films in Telugu. He has been working in Telugu films as an assistant director under a pioneering film director: Shekar Kammula, and eventually went on to make a short film titled Yadoon Ki Baraat which was screened under the Cannes Short film corner. His first feature film Yevade Subramanyam made a mark in Telugu cinema for its novel storytelling. An avid fan of Savitri, he took the daunting task of encapsulating her insanely successful but equally turbulent life into a magnum opus of a film.

Synopsis:

Mahanati (The Great Actress) is an epic tale about the rise of south Indian films’ first ever lady superstar SAVITRI. Her life, journey to fame and dramatic downfall make her story one of the most heart wrenching romantic tragedies ever. The narrative also focuses on the birth and early days of the film Industry in the country. The film draws parallels between the life of Savitri and the effect of such icons on younger generations, through a journalist named Madhuravani uncovering the story of Savitri herself, in the 80s. The lessons we learn from her story are relevant even today across cultures and languages.
