Marathi Cinema Awards

One of the most important objectives of PIFF is to give regional and indigenous cinema a global platform. With this in mind, we pick 7 of the best Marathi Films released in the year for the Marathi Competition. PIFF is the only festival where an international jury awards Marathi films. These films represent contemporary thought, culture and society in Maharashtra. They bring to fore young talent and experimental forms of filmmaking in the state. The list of previous award winners reads like a who’s who of Marathi Cinema.

A number of awards are given in this category. The Government of Maharashtra gives the “Sant Tukaram” Best International Marathi Film Award (Rs. 5 Lakh). The Akhil Bharatiya Chitrapat Mahamandal gives away the following awards – Best Film Director (Rs. 25,000), Best Film Actor male (Rs. 25,000), Best Film Actor female (Rs. 25,000), Best Screenplay (Rs. 25,000) and Best Cinematographer (Rs. 25,000).


  • Government of Maharashtra “Sant Tukaram” Best International Marathi Film is given to the film Lathe Joshi directed by Mangesh Joshi and produced by Sonal Joshi & Mangesh Joshi. Rs. 5 Lakhs is shared between the director (50%) and the producers (50%) equally.
  • Audience Award for the Best Marathi film – Ghuma Directed by Mahesh Kale
  • Akhil Bhartiya Marathi Chitrapat Maha Mandal Best Cinematographer award goes to Satyajeet Shobha Shreeram, the cinematographer of the film Lathe Joshi
  • Akhil Bhartiya Marathi Chitrapat Maha Mandal Best Marathi Screenplay award is given to Rajesh Mapuskar for the film Ventilator
  • Akhil Bhartiya Marathi Chitrapat Maha Mandal Best Marathi Film Actor award is given to Aarya Adhav the lead actor of the film Dashakriya
  • Akhil Bhartiya Marathi Chitrapat Maha Mandal Best Marathi Film Actress award is given to Tannishtha Chatterjee for the film Doctor Rakhmabai
  • Akhil Bhartiya Marathi Chitrapat Maha Mandal Best Marathi Film Director award goes to Sandip Bhalchandra Patil for the film Dashakriya
  • Special Mention certificate is recommended to the lead actor Padmanabh Bind for the film Ek te Chaar band
  • Special Jury award is given to Sandeep Sawant, the director of the film Nadi Vahate (River Flows)
