After directing a short film Paris Shanghai (2011), Thomas Cailley made his first feature film Love at First Fight (2014) to win a total of three awards including the FIPRESCI award at the Cannes. It received multiple nominations at César awards and won three, including Best First Feature Film. The Animal Kingdom is his second feature film and was chosen as the opening film for the Un Certain Regard at the Cannes 2023.
Set in near future, two years after the first mutations from human to animal, society tries to adapt to this new reality. Specialized centres are created to take care of and treat these "creatures". However, a convoy accident causes the creatures to disperse into the wild, leading to a series of unexpected events.
