Fawzia Mirza is a queer, South Asian Muslim writer and director. They co-wrote and starred in the feature Signature Move, which world premiered at SXSW, screened 150+ film festivals, won 15 awards. They wrote and directed the award-winning Noor & Layla (Outfest, BlackStar, Bentonville, Bend, Frameline, 50+ festivals worldwide) and directed the rom-com short The Syed Family Xmas Eve Game Night (world-premiered Toronto IFF 2021) named one of Canada’s Top 10. Fawzia’s directorial feature debut The Queen Of My Dreams, shot in Canada and Pakistan, world premiered Toronto IFF 2023, was nominated for the Jean Marc Valée DGC Discovery Award.
Azra, a Pakistani woman living in Toronto, is worlds apart from her conservative Muslim mother. When her father suddenly dies on a trip home to Pakistan, Azra finds herself on a Bollywood-inspired journey through memories, both real and imagined, from her mother’s youth in Karachi to her own coming- of-age in rural Canada.
