Director's Biography:

Jaione Camborda

Jaione Camborda was born in San Sebastian, Spin in 1983. She studied at the Prague (FAMU) and Munich (HFF) film schools before moving to Galicia, where she founded the production company Esnatu Zunema and directed shorts including Proba de axilidade (2015), Nimbos (2015) and Rapa das bestas (2017). Arima (2020), her debut feature, earned her the Best Director Award in the New Waves section of the Seville European FF and Best Film in the Escáner section of the Márgenes FF.

Synopsis:

1971, Illa de Arousa, Francoist Spain. Maria is a woman who earns a living harvesting shellfish. She is also known on the island for helping other women in childbirth with special dedication and care. After an unexpected event, she is forced to flee and sets out on a dangerous journey that will make her fight for her survival. Seeking her freedom, Maria decides to cross the border by one of the smugglers' routes between Galicia and Portugal. On her perilous journey to Portugal, María encounters female solidarity and realizes that she is not alone and that, thanks to the help of others, she might finally find her freedom.
