Born in Bailleul, Nord in France in 1958, he directed his debut feature film Life of Jesus in 1997; the film was selected for the Director’s Fortnight at Cannes. His feature films Humanity and Flanders both won the Grand Prize of the Jury at Cannes while Slack Bay and, most recently, the satire France, starring Lea Seydoux as a famous journalist, also screened in competition at the festival. His biopic Camille Claudel 1915 starring Juliette Binoche was invited to the Berlinale Competition in 2013.
